When Albert Spica (Michael Gambon), the thief, takes over a high-class restaurant, Richard Boarst (Richard Bohringer), the cook, is forced to put up with his outlandish requests and behavior. Accompanying Spica each evening to the restaurant are his henchman and his wife Georgina (Helen Mirren). She quickly tires of his unsavory conduct and commiserates with another patron, a bookshop owner named Michael (Alan Howard). Michael quickly becomes her lover, and with the aid of the restaurant’s staff they pursue an illicit affair. Eluding Spica’s weary eye for a time, Georgian and Michael share an intimacy that she has hungered for, but like a good meal, it will not last forever. Truly a cinematic cornucopia, the end result is a tasty treat from provocative director Peter Greenaway.
