Topless FEMEN activists staged a protest decrying violence against women outside the Palais-Royal in Paris on Thursday, as the number of women murdered in France in 2019 hit 60.

The activists stood on Buren’s Columns, near the Louvre museum, each of them with a name and a cause of death, such as “murdered with an axe,” or “thrown out a window,” written on their bare chest and chanting.

“Today we come make this kind of symbolic pantheon in open air for the victims of femicide and to call for more actions,” said FEMEN leader Inna Shevchenko. “We hope that our loud voices and our speaking bodies – our speaking naked bodies – will wake up the society and political leaders.”

France has the second-highest number of femicides in Europe after Germany, with an average of 133 women murdered each year according to the ministry of interior.
