The hermit Athanael goes to Alexandria to save the soul of the courtesan Thais, who corrupts the people with her beauty. Arriving in the city, Athanael takes refuge with an old friend, the rich man Nikias. The righteous man tries to set the courtesan on the right path. She is ready to follow him into the desert. The city dwellers want to tear Athanael to pieces because he wants to deprive them of Thais. Only the intervention of Nikias, who throws gold coins at the crowd, saves the hermit. After painful wanderings in the desert, Athanael brings the courtesan to a monastery, where she is joyfully greeted by the nuns. Having left the girl in the monastery, Athanael suddenly realizes that he cannot live without her. His soul knows no peace. One day, Athanael has a vision: it seems to him that Thais is dying. He rushes to the monastery to look at her for the last time. Seeing the dying girl, Athanael begs her to return to life and unite with him, but Thais no longer hears this. She is dead. In despair, Athanael falls at the feet of the dead.
