Glamour model/activist Ewa Sonnet.

Emmalyn Estrada has made a powerful point in her song about women baring their chests as freely as men would with theirs. Her song got me to consider my own opinion on this…

It seems to be a matter of a cultural ‘line in the sand’ when it comes to modesty. In some countries, a woman baring her ankles is considered risque. And in certain places, it is considered perfectly ok to go around without a single stitch of clothing on.

Judgements are made about those who do not conform to the norm of the group. One side observing the other extreme see them to be repressed, while that side looking at the opposite extreme see them to have no sense of morality. And these judgements are typically hard lined in seeing things as “right” or “wrong”.

Emmalyn’s song challenges not only the asymmetry between cultures, but also the imbalance found *within* a culture. If it is ok for a man to go around without a shirt on, then why is it not ok for a woman to do the same?

I myself have never lived in a society where women do this. I’ve never been to a beach where this is the norm. I’m not sure how I would feel about it. Maybe I would get used to it.

It could be said that requiring women to wear a top has the positive effect of keeping the bare female breast as a special, intimate thing.

But then would society benefit from requiring men to do the same, and would the bare male chest become a “special intimate thing” if we did? A major driver behind the rules a society creates has to do with people’s reactions. There is a question of men being stimulated just by the sight. But then again, in a culture where women hide all of their skin, then the sight of a woman’s face is probably considered to be risque.

One person we could turn to for guidance here is Darwin. Or a more modern biologist like Desmond Morris. These folks would probably tell us that it is the very force of sexual arousal that created the evolutionary trend of sexual dimorphism. That is to say, the very reason why women have exaggerated breasts (larger than what is needed to feed infants) is that they are used for sexual signaling.

And THAT would be one justification for the “legal dimorphism”, if you will. There is asymmetry in biology, so it would make sense to have asymmetry in law.

One advantage that the United States has is its diversity between states. An issue like this can be decided at the state or local level, and that serves to be a test case for the entire nation as a whole. One recent example is marijuana laws. It is clear that the tide has shifted on that issue.

So one approach to what Emmalyn, and many others, are pushing for here is for local areas to try it out and see how it goes. I’m pretty sure that there are a bunch of cities that have laws on the books that support women going topless. Hmm, that’s ironic wording that was just used – support no support. That might be the makings of a new slogan.

So what’s my own bottom line? I guess I would have to experience it to know for sure. I would like to think that I am mature enough to deal with it. Or maybe the Darwinian forces are just too strong.

Well this video might serve as one way to test the waters. As it is, I’ve flagged this one as *age restricted*, and even then, I would not be surprised if YouTube takes it down.

But an effort was made to match the visuals to the message of this song. My understanding of Emmalyn’s message, that is.
