This is a first of a series of short documentaries on the festival of the goddess UNOMKHUBULWANE. The documentary follows the Zulu maidens as they make their way to the mountain or river to make an offering to the goddess. Nomkhubulwane is the goddess of rain, nature, and fertility. In honour of the goddess, the festival was held annually over 200 years ago, but with the introduction of Christianity, the worship of the female aspects of the gods waned, although the worship of the male aspect, Unkulunkulu, remained.
The video captures the Festival of Nomkhubulwane, where Zulu maidens dance in traditional attire. Topless women with elaborate beaded necklaces perform energetic group dances in outdoor festival settings. Crowds gather around as they sway hips, clap, and play small drums in grassy fields under tents. Dr. Nomkhubulwane Ngcobo appears in a vibrant dress, gesturing amid the communal celebration.
