Discover Shiriyaki Onsen – Japan’s Wildest Natural River Hot Spring!
Hidden deep in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, Shiriyaki Onsen (尻焼温泉) offers one of the most unique onsen experiences in Japan: the entire river becomes your bathtub!
The star here is “Kawa no Yu” (River Bath) — a massive, free, open-air mixed onsen created by damming part of the Nagasasa River. Hot spring water gushes directly from the riverbed, heating the rocks and pools naturally. Sit on the warm stones, let the current flow around you, and feel completely merged with nature.
The quirky name “Shiriyaki” (literally “burned buttocks”) comes from an old legend: someone once sat on a heated rock and cured their hemorrhoids!

We recommend wearing a swimsuit (mixed bathing).
Please take all trash with you.
Camping, fires, and pets are prohibited on the premises.

1:41 The footing is rough, so water shoes are recommended.
3:07 There are two hot spring areas, the upper and lower. The water in the lower area is a little warmer.
5:30 The water is generally very clear, but when people walk, the broken leaves on the riverbed get stirred up, making it difficult to see where they’re standing.
6:02 Algae grow on the rocks on the riverbed, making it very slippery.
10:00 The deepest point in the upper area.
10:13 If you don’t use a dedicated diving case with your 360-degree camera, you’ll lose a lot of footage around the stitch line underwater.
10:33 There are also deeper areas in the lower area, but the water there is colder.

This 360-degree VR video captures a group in playful white outfits with cow plush accessories at a remote Japanese onsen. They bathe in a natural heated river amid mountains and rocky hillsides. The white garments turn semi-transparent when wet, clinging to bodies in the immersive water scenes.
