ARTIST STATEMENT:

Ritual as Consumerism (Pink)
Part of the 100 Bodypaintings Series

Live performance created at a contemporary gallery for artistic intent.

In this piece, the body becomes both altar and commodity—a site of indulgence, excess, and artificial sweetness. Created Painted in hyper-feminine pink, a color historically tied to softness, innocence, and commodified femininity, the figure is engulfed in processed food and consumer symbols, evoking a performance of appetite that teeters between pop and grotesque ritual.

This work interrogates how consumption—especially gendered and aestheticized consumption—becomes a kind of modern-day ceremony. Pink, in this context, is no longer girly. It is branding, desire, waste, and mass production rolled into one.

Part of my 100 Bodypaintings series, Ritual as Consumerism uses color-coded performance to reflect on our fractured relationship with nature, the environment, and our bodies as products within the capitalist machine.

This contemporary gallery performance is presented solely within the context of fine art, spiritual expression, and cultural significance with artistic intent. This video, on YouTube, will exhibit again at Art Basel in December.

About the Artist
Trina Merry is a leading figure in contemporary bodypaint and performance art, working in the lineage of artists like Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, and Veruschka. She studied with Robert Wilson and Marina Abramović as a Watermill Center resident and trained with Alex & Allyson Grey in visionary art. Merry’s work juxtaposes the ephemeral human body with architectural and elemental environments, forming a distinct visual and conceptual language.

She has exhibited at The Whitney Biennial, Getty Villa, San Jose Museum of Art (with Andy Goldsworthy), Museo de Bardini (Florence), Attleboro Arts Museum, and more.

This performance art video features a nude female artist covered entirely in vibrant pink body paint. She interacts ritualistically with foods like lemons, cherries, watermelons, ice cream, and donuts on a glossy pink setup. The piece builds to a messy, ecstatic climax with creamy smears and glitter accents.
